Could Hospital Food Become Healthy?

I was happy to read an article in the Globe and Mail this morning about hospitals finally realizing that the drivel they feed to patients could be harmful to the recovery process!

Several hospitals are re-structuring their kitchens, going back to cooking food from scratch and using local fresh foods.

Two years ago I spent several weeks in the hospital with a sick child, and was horrified to see what she was being served. Not only was the food lifeless and tasteless, I imagined my daughter could get the same amount of nutrition if she ate the packaging! Which there was an excess of as well!

Almost everything was pre-packaged in styro-foam type containers with plastic film on top. The waste was incredible.

I would try to run out whenever I could to find better quality food for both of us, but it was pretty challenging to get away from the hospital for any length of time.  I would have been so thankful for the homemade dishes described in the article!

Review of Pathways Healing

My site has just had a nice review written by “The Spirit Mind.”

A nice little spiritual development site. I think my head is swelling from all the praise. :)

The Positive Side-Effects of Acupuncture

Acupuncture is one of the safest treatment methods you can use to help manage pain, stress, and mobility issues. It will help with any physical injury, or sore, strained muscles.  It is also helps balance the body systems. It helps with digestive issues, hormone balancing, headaches, vertigo, tinnitus, allergies, insomnia, anxiety and depression etc. and it is virtually side-effect free.

I say virtually, because there are some risks of side-effects with acupuncture. These risks are minimal when working with a well-trained acupuncturist because they will be working within strict standards. We keep our workspaces and materials clean and sterile and take several precautions to safe-guard your health. Some of these precautions include the use of only sterile, single-use needles that are never re-used. We sterilize our hands, the needle sites on your skin and all of our equipment with alcohol. Our equipment must be stored and set-up with certain protocols including a “clean field” and a “dirty field” so there is no chance of anything contaminating one of your sterilized needles before we use it.

A well trained acupuncturist will know how to safely insert needles so that they do not injure you, and they will inform you ahead of time of any possible risks.

Below is an excerpt from my intake form, which spells out the possible risks of acupuncture treatment:

“I have completed this form to the best of my ability or memory. I understand and am informed that in the practice of Acupuncture there are risks to treatment. These are rare but may include and are not limited to minor bleeding or bruising, minor pain or soreness, nausea, fainting, infection, possible perforation of organs and stuck or bent needles. I have been advised that only pre-sterilized single-use needles will be used. I give my consent for Bonnie Adam to perform acupuncture and related protocols on me.”

Sounds a bit scary doesn’t it?

When I started writing this blog, it was not intended to focus so much on the possible negative side-effects of acupuncture. It was actually going to be a message about the positive side-effects of acupuncture.

Here’s where acupuncture has a really great advantage over many other treatments.

When you take a prescription, the pharmacist pulls you aside and explains all the possible side-effects and what to do if you experience any of them right?

When you have an acupuncture treatment, the practitioner does your treatment and informs you that you might see some tiny little bruises or have a small bump like a mosquito bite at the sites where your needles went in.

Then they also explain that you should feel very relaxed and that you should sleep very well. You may also feel that you are releasing stress and anxiety; that you are not as worried as usual. After your great sleep, you will most likely wake up feeling more energized and awake. You may also feel like you just had a great massage and any muscular pains and tension you have been having should start to ease as well.

I have had clients come in for something like allergy treatment, and find that their neck and shoulder pain has gone away at the same time. I also have clients who come in to work on anxiety and find that their allergies or headaches are decreasing. Others come in to work on their muscular aches and pains and find that their insomnia is gone.

Many people find that when they seek acupuncture treatment, their hormonal issues are being addressed at the same time. Women’s cycles become more regular and less painful and menopausal symptoms decrease, and men often find they have increased energy and more passion and stamina in the bedroom!

I think we would be very challenged to find many other treatment methods that can claim so many positive side-effects!

Acupuncture for Hot Flashes

Here is my recent article published in Spa Life Magazine!

You can feel it coming. It seems to start somewhere deep in your belly and then it rises. An inferno is burning you up from the inside out. You start ripping off layers or throwing off the covers hoping to catch it before you are completely soaked. Or even worse, you’ve woken up in the middle of the night already soaked. You wonder if you will ever get a full night sleep again.

Sound familiar? You’ve heard that hormone replacement therapies can cause side effects and increase your risk of developing cancer.

Where do you turn for relief?

Recent medical studies show that acupuncture can reduce hot flashes associated with menopause. This age old method is a safe and effective way to help balance your body systems and stimulate the release of essential hormones and endorphins.

The needles are hair thin and many people don’t even feel them being inserted. A course of treatment would involve weekly visits for approximately six to eight weeks and many women experience some level of relief within the first two weeks. Acupuncture also helps with muscle pain and tension, headaches, digestive disorders, stress relief and a variety of other conditions. Acupuncture is an amazing tool to help loosen up stiff muscles, decrease inflammation and improve mobility in the body, but that’s not all it can do!

It may be because acupuncture is used by many massage therapists and chiropractors for musculo-skeletal issues like stiff backs, sore shoulders, tennis elbows, carpal tunnel syndrome and aching knees. It’s really great that so many health professionals are embracing acupuncture as a part of their practice.

Acupuncture is a simple, quick and effective form of treatment that has none of the nasty side-effects you can get from pharmaceutical methods of treatment.

What can be overlooked is that acupuncture can help with a variety of other conditions. It can really help with allergy relief, headaches, insomnia, hormonal imbalances (including those hot-flashes!) and with digestive disorders as well.

A few quick treatments and you may find yourself feeling better than you have in years. The big bonus is the element of relaxation and stress relief you get at the same time as your physical issues are being resolved. An acupuncture treatment is said to give your body the same amount of rest as a 2 hour nap.

For more information about how I use acupuncture in my practice you can click here.

For you needle phobic people, I can achieve very similar results using laser acupuncture, Tui Na/acupressure, or Chinese cupping.

I am booking for next week!!!

Allergy Season!

Allergy Season is here!

Did you know that acupuncture is highly successful at reducing or eliminating allergies? Acupuncture is a safe and effective treatment method that is virtually side-effect free.

Some people experience relief after only one session and others need to come in once a week or so over their usual allergy season.

I have had the opportunity to help many people find relief from their itchy eyes, runny noses and sneezes, and even from puffiness and nasty skin rashes that can come along with allergies. I have suffered from allergies myself and know how annoying and disruptive they are. Anti-histamines can leave some people feeling drowsy and others feeling hyped up and anxious, not to mention the added stress all the medication places on your liver and other organs.

One of my recent clients has been an allergy sufferer for over 20 years. This person was on allergy shots and allergy pills every day for all those years. We have been able to reduce the allergies to the point that she only has to take an anti-histamine when she visits people who have cats.

Not to mention that she recently had medical allergy testing done and the allergist was surprised to see that 80% of her lifelong allergies had disappeared.
